YDS (Foreign Language Exam for Public Personnel)

The YDS is a centralized exam designed to assess the foreign language proficiency of candidates who wish to be employed in academic positions at universities or pursue postgraduate studies abroad through the Council of Higher Education (YÖK). It is also aimed at public personnel seeking foreign language compensation.

The YDS exam includes multiple-choice tests consisting of 80 questions in German, Arabic, Bulgarian, Persian, French, English, Spanish, Italian, Russian, and Greek. The exam features questions on vocabulary, grammar, translation, and reading comprehension. The duration of the exam is 150 minutes, each question is worth 1.25 points, and incorrect answers do not affect the score.

Validity of YDS Exam Results

The ÖSYM (Assessment, Selection, and Placement Center) has announced that the YDS score will be valid indefinitely for candidates applying for academic positions. However, this may vary between universities. Therefore, candidates should check the specific announcements of the universities they are applying to. For foreign language compensation, the YDS score is valid for 5 years.

Content of the YDS Exam

The YDS exam consists of 11 sections: Vocabulary, Grammar, Cloze test, Sentence completion, English to Turkish translation, Turkish to English translation, Paragraph completion, Sentence that disrupts coherence, Dialogues, Sentences with similar meanings, Reading passages.

Acceptance of YDS

The YDS is accepted by state institutions and many universities. The exam is administered twice a year by ÖSYM:

  • YDS Spring (Held at the end of March or beginning of April)
  • YDS Fall (Usually held in September)

What is E-YDS?

The E-YDS is a language exam administered on a computer. The first E-YDS was held on September 20, 2014. All rights provided to candidates taking the YDS are also applicable to those taking the E-YDS. According to the announcement on the ÖSYM website, candidates applying for the E-YDS will not receive computer training. Therefore, candidates must have the necessary knowledge and skills to use a computer. It is recommended that candidates familiarize themselves with the exam application through the E-YDS practice test available on the ÖSYM website.

E-YDS Exam Date

The E-YDS is conducted once a month at ÖSYM's exam centers in Ankara, Istanbul, and Izmir.

E-YDS Exam Duration

The exam duration is 150 minutes.

E-YDS Exam Content

The E-YDS consists of a multiple-choice test with 80 questions. The content of the E-YDS is the same as the YDS exam.

What is YÖK-DİL?

The YÖK-DİL is a foreign language exam organized for the academic community, coordinated by the Council of Higher Education (YÖK) in collaboration with Anadolu University and Ankara University. While the exam questions are prepared by Ankara University, the exam organization is managed by Anadolu University. The YÖK-DİL exam was established to replace the former ÜDS exam. It is administered in the fields of Science, Social Sciences, Health Sciences, and English, targeting primarily candidates pursuing an academic career. This exam has been in effect since 2017.

Who can apply for the YÖK-DİL exam?

Candidates wishing to apply for postgraduate and associate professorship exams, as well as others looking to assess their foreign language proficiency, can apply for the YÖK-DİL exam.

How to apply for the YÖK-DİL exam?

Applications are made through the Anadolu University Candidate Transactions screen at sinavbasvuru.anadolu.edu.tr. The exam fee can be paid online via credit card through the system.

How many questions are in the YÖK-DİL exam?

The YÖK-DİL exam consists of 80 questions, each with five choices. Candidates must bring a pen and eraser to the exam.

What is the duration of the YÖK-DİL exam?

The exam duration is 180 minutes (3 hours).

Can candidates take both the YÖK-DİL and YDS exams?

Yes, candidates can take both the YÖK-DİL and YDS exams.

What are the score requirements for doctoral and associate professorship applications in YÖK-DİL?

Similar to the YDS exam, a minimum score of 55 in YÖK-DİL is required to start a doctoral program, while a minimum score of 65 is required for associate professorship.
