What is the TOEFL Exam?
TOEFL (Test of English as a Foreign Language) is an international exam that assesses the English language proficiency of individuals whose native language is not English. It is especially recognized by universities in the United States, Canada, and other English-speaking countries, as well as by many international institutions during admission processes.
TOEFL Exam Types
The TOEFL exam is offered in three main formats:
- TOEFL iBT (Internet-Based Test): The most current and widely used format, conducted online. It includes reading, listening, speaking, and writing sections.
- TOEFL PBT (Paper-Based Test): An older format delivered on paper. It does not include a speaking section and is typically used in areas with limited internet access.
- TOEFL CBT (Computer-Based Test): Another older format administered via computer, which is no longer commonly used today.
TOEFL iBT Exam Content
The TOEFL iBT exam is designed to assess students' skills in four key areas of English:
- Reading: Evaluates the ability to understand and interpret academic texts.
- Listening: Involves understanding conversations and academic lectures.
- Speaking: Measures the ability to express ideas clearly, coherently, and effectively in spoken English.
- Writing: Tests the ability to write structured and independent essays on specific topics.
Each section is scored between 0 and 30, with a total score ranging from 0 to 120.
TOEFL Scoring and Validity
TOEFL iBT scores are valid for two years from the test date. Each section is scored individually, and many universities require a minimum total score or section-based thresholds. Prestigious institutions often expect a high level of English proficiency.
How to Prepare for the TOEFL
Preparing for the TOEFL requires balanced development of language skills and familiarity with the exam format. Numerous language schools and educational institutions offer dedicated TOEFL preparation courses. These courses provide reading strategies, listening techniques, structured speaking exercises, and writing practice to help candidates succeed in the exam.
